40th Birthday Favors

If you've been reading my blog, you know that I am about to hit the big 4-0. Forty. When I was looking for party favors, I found Cool Party Favors and their huge selection of favors. The have showers and sweet 16 and other fun stuff. But, what I am looking for is 40th Birthday Favors. And they have quite a few choices: playing cards; wine tools; candles; cookies and more!

These look fun!

The mint come in two sizes and half a dozen choices of colors, fonts, and font colors. You submit a picture and they put it on the label. They even offer 3 different candies.

Cool Party Favors is also sponsoring my 40th Birthday Bash and will be giving away 4 of their High Heel Cake Servers. Watch for details.

Charming Bracelet

When I was growing up, my older sister (8 years older than me) had a charm bracelet. Every time we went to a new state or a national park Carmen got a new charm. She got charms for Sweet 16 and representing musicals she had been involved in. Her charm bracelet was full of memories. I used to love to sit and look through them and remember things. Her senior year (my 5th grade year) we had an exchange student from Finland. My parents bought Eva a charm bracelet representing her year here.

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review a charm bracelet from The Charm Factory.

They let me pick out 8 charms. I'll tell you, it is hard to describe a life in 8 icons--especially with so many great choices!) I received a clasp bracelet with these charms (representing):
violin (Chewie); Firecrarcker (Crunchy); Tricycle (Munchie); flash camera (John); self control(what I'm working on); 40 (my birthday!); Matt 29:16 (my faith); and kissing (marriage).

The bracelet is beautiful! I love to swirl my hand and watch them move! The only complaint I have is I had a lot of trouble with the clasp. Even asking for help, it was a bit difficult to secure. (They do offer a magnetic clasp in addition to the lobster clasp.)

The Charm Factory is going to give one of you a chance to win a charm bracelet with your choice during my 40th Birthday Bash!

Here are some pictures. (Sorry, it's hard to take a picture of your wrist with a camera phone!)

From left to right: 40; tricycle; violin; camera

The whole bracelet.

Out of the mouth of babes...

I had my second appointment with Karen, my diet coach yesterday. She was happy with my food log. (In fact, she even asked if she could copy it to show her other clients.) According to her scale, I lost about 5 pounds since my last visit. And my blood sugar was only 97 about 2 1/2 hours after eating. (According to my home scale I lost about 2.5 pounds since I started last Monday.)

So..about that title...I was at a home visit today with 2 and 3 year old brothers. There 4 year old brother joined us in the playroom. He has seen me many times over the years. (I worked with him when he was younger.)

Today he came up and asked me, "How come you are so fat?" He didn't say it with any malice--just curiosity. (His mom has had 4 kids in 4 years--the oldest is the same age as Munchie, my baby!) I deflected with, "That's just how I am. We are all different."

Intensely Cool

I discovered this by accident! Take a stick of Extra Spearmint gum and chew it for a few minutes. Then take a drink of ice water. (It has to be cold.) You will feel an intense coldness down your throat. It is almost painful, but definitely cool.

An Unexpected Compliment

Last week I had to take all three kids to the dentist. Fortunately it wasn't as tramatic as previous visits. They put all three of them in a row of cubicles. John was at one end with Munchie. I was on the other end with Crunchy. Chewie was in the middle.

After Crunchy's cleaning, the dentist came in. He said, "You have the Mommy with the pretty voice." I have always loved to sing, but I have never had the voice to sing solos (which was my greatest desire.) Maybe with some training I could do well, but I have never had the opportunity.

So, what was Dr. K talking about? Last month when Munchie had his filling he was very scared. While waiting for novacaine to take effect, I leaned over his chair and sang several songs: "You are a promise"; "You're something special"; and "Light of the world". I finished my last song after the dentist returned.

So, finally, I was appreciated by someone besides my kids.

12 Ways to Turn Your Pain into Praise Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for Linda Newton 12 Ways to Turn Your Pain Into Praise: Biblical Steps to Wholeness in Christ. Join me as we talk with Linda.....

I’m delighted to be here with you sharing about something that puts wind in my sails—helping people heal from emotional pain and lead empowered lives.

What a timely book, 12 Ways to Turn Your Pain Into Praise: Biblical Steps to Wholeness in Christ! With our current economic and political climate we certainly need steps to turn our pain into praise.

I agree. I find that the same tools that help us deal with our damaged past can
guide us through an insecure future. I wrote this book to help people who feel
“stuck” because of the dysfunction, divorce, depression, abuse, grief and guilt
in their lives, but I am walking through these same principals each day in my
counseling office with folks who are dealing with the difficulties of job loss,
anxiety, and marriage issues in a struggling economy.

You’re a counselor and an abuse survivor. Will you tell us a little of your story?

I grew up in the deep South and I wish I could say we spent happy hours saying, “Yes Ma’am” and “No Sir” and “Good Night, John-Boy.” But nothing could be further from the truth. In reality, I was ten years old before I realized that God’s last name wasn’t damn! My Daddy took off when I was five, and raising four kids alone brought out the worst in my mother. She became abusive with a bust-your-lip, black-your-eye kind of punishment--the kind of pain that stings your face for a while but sears your soul for a lifetime.

The neighbor-lady from across the street took me to church, I found Christ and He changed my life. That church helped me get to Christian college. On my quest for my own healing, I became a Christian counselor and have had the privilege of working with God’s precious people for the past seventeen years in my office at a growing church in California.
You talk about one of those people, Donnetta Jean, as she moves through the steps to get the healing that she needs. Is she a real person?
Donnetta represents the many damaged people in today’s postmodern culture—distanced by pain from the God they desperately need.

When I read a self-help book, I love to see personal examples of the tools presented, but I find myself wondering how the person in the example turns out. In 12 Ways you get to walk through the process from start to finish as you see the healing of Donnetta Jean unfold. Then you know the path for your own healing.
You started each chapter with a word that starts with the letter “P.” That had to take some work.
Each chapter is one of the steps, and I did that to make them easy to remember. I’m at the stage of life when I stop and think and forget to start up again! Alliteration helps things stick in my head.

My first “P” is Perspective. Chapter 3 and 4 include Prayer and the Power we find in God’s Word. They are pivotal parts of recovery, to be sure, but until we adjust our perspective to see what’s good in life, we can’t reap the benefit of prayer and scripture reading. Before I shifted my perspective, God could have parked a burning bush by my front door to convince me of His love, and I would have stamped out the fire and complained about the inconvenience! It took a long time for me to train myself to see the cup half full instead of always seeing it half empty. But without that fundamental change, it wouldn’t matter how much God intervened in my life to bring good, I wouldn’t see it as such.
Can you share the rest of your chapter titles?
1. Predicament: Donnetta Jean Jones
2. Perspective: Honey Let Me Tell Ya
3. Power: I Got a Rock (Which tells us what the Bible says about us.)
4. Prayer: Present In His Presence
5. People: We’re In This Together
6. Patience: Locust Lunch
7. Plan: Jesus In the Rearview Mirror
8. Pardon: The Healing Power of Forgiveness
9. Provision: Jettisoning Emotional Baggage
10. Priorities: Making the Main Thing the Main Thing
11. Passion: Warts and All
12. Purpose: The Real Thing
Epilogue--Praise: Chocolate Chip Muffins.
This book can serve as a workbook for the reader as well, right?
Yes, at the end of each chapter, I’ve included an exercise titled, “Truster Reconstructer” to help the reader pause, ponder and personalize each step. I told you I like alliteration! If you complete the exercises in this book you will have the equivalent of 12 sessions of therapy. At the national average of $80 an hour, the price of one book is quite deal! But don’t stop with just one book. 12 Ways works as a powerful small group study. Each chapter presents an obstacle to faith and the scriptural solutions for that obstacle. Women have shared with me they feel like it is equivalent to 12 weeks of applicable Bible study.
In your chapter on People, your mentioned the importance of confidence only you didn’t call it self-esteem. You called it “Jesus-teem.” What does that look like?
We have heard enough over the past few years about self-esteem, but Scripture tells us that when we embrace the Lord’s view of ourselves, we’re free to be comfortable in our own skin. God’s view of us is revealed in his Word and through the compliments of others. In chapter 3 about the Power we find in the Bible, I have included a page full of verses with the personal pronouns left out and a blank space provided for you to write in your name. That way you can take ownership of each verse, let it soak into your soul, and change the way you feel about yourself. When we can fully get our heads around how God feels about us, it changes the way we feel about ourselves. That’s Jesus-teem!
You mentioned compliments defining us. Can you explain that?
My old pastor used to say that compliments are bouquets thrown from the hand of God. When we don’t take the compliments given to us, it’s as though we are ripping the heads off the flowers God has given us, throwing them to the ground, and stomping them. Compliments are God’s way of telling us who we are. When we receive them it builds our confidence in the qualities and gifts He’s given us. But when we don’t, we remain static and self-critical.

I took those words to heart and stopped dismissing compliments some twenty years ago. In that time God has had the opportunity to remake my self-image. Before that I had to climb a ladder to look an ant in the eye!
“Jesus in the Rearview Mirror,” now there’s a title. Tell us about that chapter.
God has a plan for us, but many times the view we have of what is happening around us as we cruise through life is often challenging, even frightening. From our viewpoint, looking through the windshield, we only see calamity, but all the while God is working. Later, when we look back over our lives, as we peer into the rearview mirror, we are able to see the Plan that God was working out all along. Recognizing God’s plan builds our faith.
You present a powerful prayer exercise to help people unpack their emotional baggage in the chapter on Provision. What can you tell us about that?
Years ago a wonderful Christian counselor taught me this life-changing prayer exercise to help me dump the anger, hurt and resentment of my abuse. Until that point, I thought I would have to bear the burden of my painful childhood forever. But I walked out of her office that day a new person. I have had the privilege of sharing this gift many times in my office and now, I am sharing it for all to read. It’s enough that abuse victims have experienced pain, we don’t have to keep reliving it. We can be set free, thank God!
You tell Donetta’s story of healing and your own story in a way that keeps us turning the pages to see what’s going to happen next. Have you always been a storyteller?
I’ve always loved stories especially ones I can relate to. I recently published two stories in Chicken Soup for the Chocolate Lover’s Soul and one in Chicken Soul for the Tea Lover’s Soul and now What I Leaned From My Dog, due out in October 2009. I believe everybody has a story—a string of stories that make up life. In fact one of the steps in my book to turn pain into praise is to write down those moments in your life when God shows up—the stories of his faithfulness. I call them “Monumental Moments.” After writing down my monumental moments for years, I filled a book with stories that was recently published by Warner Press.

My book of stories, Better Than Jewels: 31 Days of Biblical Insight for a Woman Seeking God is a devotional that starts each day with a scripture from Proverbs and a short relevant story to illustrate that verse. In it, I share more of how God miraculously intervened in my life to turn Tennessee trailer trash into a fully loved follower of Christ! It’s currently available through Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com or on my website LindaNewtonSpeaks.com.
The pain in your life hasn’t hindered your sense of humor, has it?
I hope not! My goal for all the books I write is for the reader to laugh, learn, and leave each page feeling closer to the Lord.
Are you working another book?
Yes. My working title is You Can Fix Stupid: Seven Savvy Choices for Mind, Body and Soul. I deal with people everyday who are in terrible situations that were preventable. I want to give folks information to make better choices and avoid being “stupid.” I am working on a blog on my website that addresses these issues.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your book?
Since the book’s release last fall I have heard feedback from readers and I can say with confidence that whether you are seeking tools to empower those you are helping or needing the tools to transform yourself, you will walk away from this book spiritually stronger as you learn to:
¨ remove your offender’s face from God and stop blaming Him for life’s pain
¨ stop renting space in your head to bad memories and offenses
¨ relinquish the stinkin’ thinkin’ that causes you to emotionally circle the drain
¨ stay constantly connected to Christ with time-tested tools to process your pain
¨ realize your full potential as you seek God’s divine purpose for your life.
Closing: Thanks so much for having me on your blog. I hope your readers will visit me online at http://www.lindanewtonspeaks.com/. Please remember that God deeply desires to turn your pain into to praise.

Skin Free Review and Giveaway

I hope the picture below didn't scare you! I've been wanting to try out a face mask for a while, so when Skin Free gave me the opportunity to try some products, I chose the Green Clay Mask for Blemish Prone Skin (seen below); the Spa Scrub Power Pak; and the Niaouli Butter Stick™.

I liked the mask. (One warning: be sure to close your mouth before it starts to dry! My mouth got really dry because I couldn't close it until I washed it off!) The mask has some very strong scents that were a bit overpowering at first, but I quickly adjusted. The mask washed off easily and my face did feel softer.

I asked for the Spa Scrub Power Pak because my heels are so rough. I did notice a difference after using the sugar scrub. I would have really enjoyed it if I had someone use the scrub on me (ala manicure!).

I didn't like the Niaouli Butter Stick as much. It was recommended for my cracked heels. On my heels, it felt kind of odd, and I stuck to the floor. I it might worked better if I had put socks on. The stick smelled good. It looks like a giant tube of chap stick (and kind of felt like it too).

The Unexpected Gift Review and Giveaway

The Unexpected Gift is an easy read with a great message: give to others and you will receive more than you bargained for. The story follows the journey of a newly divorced (and slightly bitter) woman as she brings a gift of old baby clothes to a poor pregnant woman. She thought that was the end of the story, but after a couple of chance meetings, they develop an unlikely friendship. And both of them learn so much about themselves as life.

About the authors: Meaghan Gonzales Wagar and Michelle Bulmer Atha both received graduate degrees in education and have dedicated themselves to public education. Meaghan teaches fifth grade and is a mother of two. She is a native of Atlanta, a baseball team-mom and church volunteer, where she ministers to new moms with home-cooked meals. Originally from Milford, Conn., Michelle teaches Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, in addition to the second graders she teaches at an Atlanta area elementary school. In her classroom, students write letters and send care packages to the soldiers. She has two girls and is remarried.

As someone who has had faced difficulty (infertility), I learned that the best way out of hopeless and dispair is to give back. And I got back so much more than I ever gave. This book really resonated with me. The characters are believable. The plot line is entertaining, but also makes you stop and think. I read the entire book in just a couple of hours.

I need to give one caveat. Most of the books I write about are from a distinctly Christian perspective. Both characters express a relationship with God. However, there is some coarse language as well as a sexual encounter (not graphic) that caught me off guard.

I took the book with me to a work retreat, and my boss saw it on my bed. She's reading it now! :)

Would you like to win a copy! I have 3 to give away!

Feeling left out (BlogHer)?

Come join the parties! If you don't know what BlogHer is----where have you been?!?! It's a big party held annually for women bloggers. It's in Chicago. This weekend. And I'm not there. Of the millions of bloggers out there, only 1500 or so are in Chicago this weekend. The rest of us are partying!

So far I've found:

Non Blogher Party

My friend Jenni's post is here: InfertilityMom

So, who am I? Good question. I'm Julie. I'm a Mom 2 Ways: by birth and by adoption. I turn 40 in a couple of months (and I'm having a big party!) I write about my faith, my family, my never ending struggle with weight, and I enjoy doing product reviews. I've been married to my sweetheart for 22 years. After years of infertility, I have 3 beautiful children: Chewie (11); Crunchy (6) and Munchie (4). I work full time and I blog for fun. You can read more about me here.

I will be posting some giveaways this evening (if I stop tweeting long enough!) and be sure to check back for my big 40th birthday bash where I have lots of cool prizes!

Farm Kids

I think this is the first time my kids got that close to a farm animal.

My new salad plate

A couple of days ago I showed you my new salad plate given to me by a friend and co-worker D. Here it is with a salad. It was much nicer to eat my salad on a pretty plate.

My very good friend and co-worker D left this on my desk today. She said, "If you are going to eat salads you might as well look like you are at Olive Garden".

Thanks! I will enjoy my salads on this beautiful plate.

South Beach Here I come

Today is the big day! I start the South Beach Diet. I celebrated last night with a big Pepsi and a See's Candy bar (Scotchmallow). Funds are a little low this pay period, so I had to get creative at the grocery store last night. But I have some vouchers for Farmer's Market on Saturday, so that should help. None of my coupons were much help since most coupons are for packaged foods, and I'm eating mostly veggies and lean protein. But I- I will survive.... (Sorry. You know me...always ready to break out into song!)

I promise not to make this blog all about my diet, but I can't keep up with multiple blogs. (Check out my profile---I have about 8 list, but most have not been updated in MONTHS or longer!)

Good news but....

I am not out of the woods. I finally got my blood work back. (I was supposed to hear in a couple of days--it has been a week.) I do NOTHave diabetes!!! My fasting was 108, my one hour was 164, and my 2 hour was 128. I did not take my metformin that morning, but I had it the night before. I think that made a difference.

This morning I met with my friend Karen who is working with her doctor husband doing diet advice. I am going to start The South Beach Diet this weekend. I told her I wasn't going to try now because I am going away for a retreat for work this week. She agreed it would be good to wait.

I have a lanyard that I wear to church every week with my nametag.

I am: Possibilities Review

One of my favorite songs to sing to my kids is
I am a promise, I am a possibility, I am a promise with a capital "P"
I am a great big bundle of potentiality
And I am learning to hear God's voice, and I am trying to make the right choices
I'm a promise to be, anything God wants me to be
(Except I change it from "I" to "You" because I want them to know that they are a promise!)

So I was thrilled when I received a puzzle piece from www.thegoodcheercompany.com with the word "Possibilities" on it. (Here it is on my keyring.)

It is such a simple concept: affirm people (and pets!) while reminding them that they are a part of the puzzle. Our lives are all interconnected.
The pendants are made of peweter and are available on necklaces, braclets and rings. You can also buy the pendants loose. There are more than 40 words available, but my favorites are: Blessed, Authentic, and Unstoppable.

Teething Bling

SmartMom Jewelry sent me a sample of their teething bling. And all I can say is, "Where was this when I had babies?" I am not a big jewelry wearer. But with babies, I rarely wore any. If you have ever held a baby, you know how enticing pretty jewelry is for them. And my babies always had a strong grip! The colors are beautiful and the shapes are eye-catching. It doesn't look like a teething toy! These should definitely be on your list for baby shower gifts.

Made from the same material as many teething toys, Teething Bling® looks great on Moms, Grandmas, Aunts and Caregivers but is safe for curious babies to handle and chew. Teething Bling® products are non-toxic, phthalate, BPA, PVC and lead free and all pendants come with a breakaway clasp.

Many celebrities have been sited wearing Teething Bling® (including Holly Robinson Peete and Angela Bassett.)

BowHausNYC portable water bowl

Do you have a pampered pooch? If so, BOWHAUSNYC is for you (and FiFi!) . Manhattan fashion designer Ruby Chan couldn't find fashionable accessories for her pug Mao. Fortunately, she knew what to do. Taking the Bauhaus design movement as her inspiration, she created BOWHAUSNYC to create luxury dog accessories with great modern design, highest-quality materials and the best workmanship that are both beautiful and functional. I think she achieved her goal! What do you think?

I had the chance to try out the Wristlet Water Bowl. When I first opened the package I thought it was a coin purse. It folds almost completely flat and zips up to remain thin. But unzipped, it is a HUGE water bowl. To give you a perspective of the size, I photographed it with my keys (2 car keys, 3 door keys, and a padlock key with one key fob).
