Geocaching: Our new family hobby

I first heard of Geocaching* (defined below) a few years ago (I think it was my HP friend Melanie!), but I didn't have a GPS (global positioning system). I got a GPS unit last month, so I decided to check it out. I found The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site. I figured that, since I live in a relatively small city (about 50,000) about 3 hours from anywhere, there would be few "caches" in Roswell. Boy was I surprised! There are 385 caches within 25 miles of my front door. (Half of them are within 5 miles!)

Our first day out (last Saturday) we found 4 caches. We also didn't find 4 others. Some are easy finds; others require some serious digging. If you are in Roswell, I recommend you start with Space Mail. It was our first search, and when we pulled up, we had no doubts we were in the right place.

Chewie (the 12 year old) is really enjoying it! He has helped me enter the coordinates in the GPS (when I couldn't get the computer to connect); he carries the GPSr (that is the receiver); and he has found 2 of the 5 caches we have logged.

Crunchy (6) and Munchie (4) enjoy the idea of a treasure hunt, but they get bored easily.

The reason I was so interested in beginning geocaching is I wanted to find something we could do as a family, that would get us outside and moving, and that would be something new for all of us. Geocaching fits the bill completely!

*What is geocaching?
According to Geocaching.com:
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.
According to Wikipeida:

Geocaching is an outdoor activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container (usually atupperware or ammo box) containing a logbook. Larger containers can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets of little value. Geocaching is most often described as a "game of high-tech hide and seek", sharing many aspects with orienteering, treasure-hunting, andwaymarking.

Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antarctica. As of April 10, 2010, there are over 1,031,429 active geocaches over the world.

Zippity Doo Review and Giveaway

There are lots of things we, as parents, have to deal with that are not pleasant: runny (or bloody) noses; dirty diapers; puke; and potty training accidents. We clean these up because we love our kids (and because nobody else will do it!) One thing that get to even the strongest of moms is head lice. (Okay...raise your hand if your head started itching when you read that last sentence!) Even the thought of lice makes most of our skin crawl.

I have been fortunate to not have the experience of "de-lousing" (is that the word?) my kids. But one time in high school, I had been working with kids and got a bad case. Not fun. At all.

Now there is a product that claims to PREVENT the problem in the first place. I am all for preventing. Zippity Doo's sent me their line of children's haircare and surface prevention products to try out. Now, I am all for giving products a test drive for my readers, but I won't be testing the product completely with my kids. I mean, I am not going to intentionally expose them to lice to see if it works. If you win, you can try that out yourself!

Zippity Doo's is
mild and safe enough to use every day, and it provides natural gentle prevention instead of harsh treatments.

The full line includes 2 products for bath time: Zippity Doo’s™Shampoo and Zippity Doo’s™ Conditioner as first line of defense against lice and other insects; 2 products to use in the morning:Zippity Doo’s™ Leave-In Detangler or Zippity Doo’s™ Styling Gel for an added and fresh layer of lice prevention before the kids head off to school or camp; and Zippity Doo’s™ Shield Spray on all surfaces, including hats, helmets, backpacks, pillows, bedding, toys, combs, clips, berets and other items and hair accessories that may harbor lice, nits and other insects.shampooconditionerdetanglershield sprayGel

Cold and Flu Season

Has flu season hit your area yet? In our county, we have had 4 deaths due to "swine flu": H1N1. Two of the deaths were high school students. The flu is a serious concern this year. Most people who have died have not died from H1N1. They have died from secondary infections. How do we keep our kids safe? Of course there are the obvious ways to avoid germs: good hand washing; hand sanitizers; coughing into their sleeves. But is that enough? My kids are in school most of the day. I can't control what they do when they are away from me. Giving them extra vitamins is a good start. Keeping them warm and toasty also helps. There are homeopathic medicines used to treat many conditions, such as allergies, flu-like symptoms, cough and cold, pre-menstrual syndrome, arthritic pain, etc. Boirion, a world leader in homeopathy, has several products for children.
New to help parents are Children’s Oscillococcinum to nip flu-like symptoms in the bud and Children’s Coldcalm Pellets, a multi-symptom cold reliever. Along with Children’s Chestal for all types of coughs, these homeopathic medicines work safely and naturally without causing side effects and they won’t interact with other medications.

I haven't tried these yet (but thanks to the One2One Network, I will be getting a sample) . If you are interested, you can pick up a coupon here.

I am NOT a rabbit!

I am getting so sick of veggies! Salads...cucumbers...UGH!! I am going to go NUTS if I can't start eating real food. I don't know if South Beach is for me! I miss my Pepsi. I miss bread. (This week I can start adding one serving of bread a day).

Okay. I needed to get that off my chest. I feel better now.

Skin Free Review and Giveaway

I hope the picture below didn't scare you! I've been wanting to try out a face mask for a while, so when Skin Free gave me the opportunity to try some products, I chose the Green Clay Mask for Blemish Prone Skin (seen below); the Spa Scrub Power Pak; and the Niaouli Butter Stick™.

I liked the mask. (One warning: be sure to close your mouth before it starts to dry! My mouth got really dry because I couldn't close it until I washed it off!) The mask has some very strong scents that were a bit overpowering at first, but I quickly adjusted. The mask washed off easily and my face did feel softer.

I asked for the Spa Scrub Power Pak because my heels are so rough. I did notice a difference after using the sugar scrub. I would have really enjoyed it if I had someone use the scrub on me (ala manicure!).

I didn't like the Niaouli Butter Stick as much. It was recommended for my cracked heels. On my heels, it felt kind of odd, and I stuck to the floor. I it might worked better if I had put socks on. The stick smelled good. It looks like a giant tube of chap stick (and kind of felt like it too).

South Beach Here I come

Today is the big day! I start the South Beach Diet. I celebrated last night with a big Pepsi and a See's Candy bar (Scotchmallow). Funds are a little low this pay period, so I had to get creative at the grocery store last night. But I have some vouchers for Farmer's Market on Saturday, so that should help. None of my coupons were much help since most coupons are for packaged foods, and I'm eating mostly veggies and lean protein. But I- I will survive.... (Sorry. You know me...always ready to break out into song!)

I promise not to make this blog all about my diet, but I can't keep up with multiple blogs. (Check out my profile---I have about 8 list, but most have not been updated in MONTHS or longer!)

I had the opportunity to try out a SummerTime Treat for Feet! Pure peppermint essential oil revives aching muscles, putting a little pep in your step and tea tree oil to heal and brighten nails.
The Wasabi Mint Foot Scrub was easy to use. I just rubbed it on my feet and slipped on some socks. (No rinsing required!) Immediately, I was greeted with a cooling sensation. C Pap Round 2

I had a sleep study about a year ago, and it was determined that I have severe sleep apnea. I had 47 episodes and hour, and some of them were almost a minute long. (If you aren't familiar with apneas, it is when someone's airway closes and they stop breathing.) I had so many episodes that after 2 hours they "split" the study. Normally, the patient spends the first night sleeping and being monitored. Then the second night is adjusting the monitor. The doctor ordered a CPAP (constant positive airway pressure) machine. But I could never get it to work. And due to insurance issues, I couldn't see him again. Last month I finally made it to a new doctor. He ordered the machine to be reprogrammed, but it required a new machine. My new machine arrived yesterday. Last night I slept the entire night with it. And my new full face mask. Isn't it pretty?

The 3 F's

I have long known that I was high risk for diabetes. I've been on metformin (aka glucophage) for 10 years. Three of my mom's siblings are diabetic. My sister had 4 (out of 4) gestational diabetic pregnancies. My mother has been hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) since high school. And I am quickly approaching the 3rd F: Fat (always overweight; morbidly obese 20+ years); Female (all my life!); and Forty (in 3 months). I have had numerous blood sugar tests. With both pregnancies, I failed the 1 hour GTT (glucose tolerance test) but passed the 3 hours. Both babies were 9 pounders. But so far, I have skated by.

Until this weekend. On Friday I realize I was peeing all day. Now I usually pee a lot. But this was like ever 20-30 minutes. I looked up some info on diabetes and decided to do a fasting sugar on Saturday morning. (I had received a glucose m0nitor recently.) Normal range is 70-99. 100-125 is considered "pre-diabetic". Anything over 126 (at least 2 occurances) is considered diabetic.

Saturday morning's fasting sugar was 148. Yikes! After eating (including birthday cake) I tested again: 199. (Oh my!) I waited an hour to see if it went down. Nope. 353. (Oh dear!). One more hour and it went down to 209. This morning's fasting was lower, but still came in at 132.

I'm calling my doctor tomorrow.

I did talk to my friend who is a doctor. Anything over 200--no matter what you have eaten--is considered full blown diabetes.

I'm starting my diet tomorrow

No, not in the procrastinating, never-arriving, "tomorrow". I'm really starting my diet tomorrow (April 8, 2009). Why that date? Because it is my half-birthday. In exactly 6 months, I will be 40. My goal was to lose 100+ pounds before I turned 40. Instead, I regained the 30 pounds I lost---and they each brought friends. So I am now at my highest weight ever: 281 pounds. Tomorrow morning, I will begin 3 months of Weight Watchers Online that I won from The Vuv Club.

I won't be posting all of the details here. (I don't want to bore you!) But I will be updating my Less of Julie blog. Maybe eventually I'll even make a button to find me easily. (Anybody want to offer to make one?!?!?)

It is time to start. (Prayers would be appreciated!)

Fitness Friday: Blog Swing Guest

As part of the Wii Fit Mommies Blog Swing I am happy to introduce my guest blogger. Today you'll find me at a CT girl in KS. Check out the other imposters, er guests, at Wii Fit Mommies.
Hi everyone! My name is Devon and I blog over at MamaCheaps.com! First, I’d like to thank Julie for letting me have the guest spotlight on today’s Fitness Friday!
I’d like to tell you a story about my experience with fitness through pictures! Before the arrival of my daughter, Lilyana, I succumbed to ALL SORTS of torturous, long, grueling workout DVDs and programs. Sadly, I probably own more than this- these are just the ones in my living room!

But let’s face it—once the baby arrived, I just did not have the time devote 60 minutes to a full workout video. In fact, after I came home with Lily AND a painful c-section incision, I all but banished the word EXERCISE in my house! Then as the weeks went on, I came to realize that even though the videos might be out for now, Lily and I certainly could work together on this working out thing. You all probably know that there is NO shortage of fitness products for BABIES!

From the floor gyms…

To the Exersaucers…

To the Jumparoos…

Babies seem to find exercise everywhere! But for mommies, it might not be so easy. Sure, there’s always going for walks (weather permitting outside or indoors like the mall), but sometimes that just isn’t feasible.

And then, I finally found something that not only gives me a workout, but believe it or not, it’s fun too. That’s right- the Wii Fit from Nintendo! I had so much fun the very first time I stepped on my balance board, and even broke a sweat! It’s fast paced, entertaining, and it documents your training, which gives me one less thing to worry about! Oh yeah- and the best thing about the Wii Fit? Lily likes to play too. So, even when she won’t go down for a nap, I can still get some workout time! (Thanks to my husband for posing!)

So, the lesson here is simple. Do you have to run out and buy a Wii Fit? Definitely not! What you do have to do, though, is find SOME way to get some exercise that you (and your baby/children) can enjoy together! I hope to show Lily that exercise is not only important, but can be fun and not a chore. That’s a lesson that I wish my parents had stressed to me, and a legacy that I would be proud to pass on.

Happy Fitness Friday, everyone!!

Fitness Friday: getting real

A picture's worth a thousand words? Let's just say it's time for me to get real, stop making excuses, and start getting fit. Sure, the shorts were old and kind of worn. But if I hadn't tried to stuff so much of me into them, they would not have done this:

Not only have a gained back all of the weight I lost last year (about 40 pounds), I am about 15 pounds heavier than I was when I started. And, I've surpassed my highest weight--ever. I have to make a change. It's time to get real and get moving.

There is usually a Mr. Linky for Fitness Friday, but I can't find it. Here is the Wii Mommies link.

Fitness Friday

This hasn't been a good Pepsi week. I've been drinking a couple of water bottles every day, but I've also had Pepsi each day. :( It's hard to give up.

I've have at least done the Fitness Test on the Wii Fit every day. In fact, I have 2 1/2 weeks of marks on my calendar! I have done yoga and strength training at least 3 days this week, and I took a couple of walks. Tonight, I should hit 20 hours! (I am about 30 minutes away!!)

My weight continues to fluctuate. Almost every time I get on the Wii Fit, I have either gained 2.7 pounds or lost 3.2 pounds or something like that. I need to weigh at the same time every day. But it's so hard to get up early in the morning. (Heck! It's hard to get up in the morning--early or not!)

Check out the other Wii Fit Mommies at Fitness Friday.

Fitness Friday

Today, I am the featured guest over at Wii Fit Mom's Fitness Friday.

I have used my Wii Fit for 9 days in a row. A couple of the days I was only able to log in and do the body tests. But I'm trying to make sure I at least do that much. Three days this week (Sun, Mon, Tues), I did ALL of the Yoga and Strength Training sets that don't require floor space. I just don't have a place to do that right now. (And I'm not sure I'm up to the poses yet!) Also, for the first time this week, I added in some other exercise. I walked 30 minutes two days and 15 minutes another day, so I entered this on my activity log. (To do this, just click on the chart icon on the main screen.) I haven't spent as much time on the Balance Games or the Aerobics section.

On the water/Pepsi front.....I'm not drinking as much Pepsi as "normal" for me. But I have been drinking too much. I did avoid it all together on Monday and Tuesday. But I think I've had some every other day this week. :(

Emotionally, this has been a rough week. One day while walking (and very sore from yoga and strength training) I kept asking myself, "Why am I doing this?" I know my health with be better for longer if I lose the weight. I know I'll be able to play with my kids more. I know I'll be able to buy clothes that fit me and flatter me. But then the voices reminded me, my health is good right now. And I can run from the car to the store with my kids. And I have a closet full of clothes that fit me.

One thing I really struggle with is : This has to be a life altering experience. I can't look at this as a temporary fix to get me to goal and then life can return to "normal'. There has to be a new normal. I need to learn to like healthy foods, and learn to avoid or greatly reduce unhealthy foods----forever! I will need to exercise for the rest of my life. Maintaining won't be easy, but it will easier if I don't try to take short cuts on the way to the goal.

This week, my weight and BMI has gone up and down. Yesterday morning I weighed in at 268--one pound less than last week. But I've been up to 272 this week as well, so I'm not really sure where I ended up.

Last week, the Wii Fit Mommies passed on three blog awards to me. While I am thrilled to accept the award, I have decided not to "do" awards anymore because they cause me great stress. Last time I posted one, I spent several hours trying to figure out who to "award". I didn't want to bother someone. I didn't want to send it to someone who didn't know me or my blog. It just stressed me out. These are the awards I was given. And I pass them on to any of my readers who would like to take one.

Fitness Friday

It's Friday again. My resolve to not drink Pepsi had some snags. Last Friday, hubby took me to lunch and ordered me a Pepsi. Now, I can't blame him completely....I was standing at the register and didn't correct him. After a few hours of shopping, I asked him to stop for a Pepsi. He asked, "Am I supposed to put my foot down here and say, 'no'?" Nope. This time I need it! The next day was a rough day too. Before going to meet some friends for a play date, I grabbed a big jub of Pepsi. I had already decided that Sunday was my cheat day. We usually get a soda on our way home from church. But, i was good Monday-Wednesday. Yesterday, I had one soda, and today I had one. But I have been drinking lots of water.

I only used the Wii Fit 3 times this week. Sunday I got a great workout (a full hour!) including an 11 minutes jog. I did the 6 minutes advanced hula hoop (3 minutes each side). But, I had to pause 3 times because I thought I was gonna die! I only paused for a few seconds, but it was enough to get my breath back. Yesterday I logged a full hour.

Now for the weight....I was down to 269. Unfortunately, that is what I was "down" to last week. I went back up to 272 this past week. But I blame both the weight gain (and most of the loss) on my cycle starting yesterday. (TMI).

Fitness Friday

I had decided I as going to pick one day a week to keep my readers up to date and to keep my accountable to my goals for this year. Since the Wii Fit Mommies have a Fitness Friday Meme, I figured Friday's as good a day as any to post. :)

So today is the start. I told you last week that I was working hard to convince myself that I crave water. It's not quite working, but I did go 4 1/2 days drinking 5 or more bottles of water. I decided that New Year's Eve would be a splurge, and I asked John to pick up ONE bottle of Pepsi for me. Wanting to be nice he picked up two. :) I drank quite a bit of Pepsi (not to mention the wine/champagne!) on New Year's Eve and then on New Year's Day. But I'm back to drinking water. (I've had one bottle so far today.) I'm working on my goal of getting used to this one big change before I try to add to many more. (So I have had more chocolate than I need!)

My Wii Fit is not getting as much use as I'd like. It's really hard getting up early in the morning if I didn't get to sleep before midnight. And every time I turn on the Wii, the kids come running! They want to watch (which I don't mind), but they have trouble staying still. Last time I tried, Crunchy walked behind just as I was doing a leg stretched. I almost kicked her. I didn't want to hurt her (or me---if I fell off the balance board!) so I just turned it off. I've got to find a way to make it work with my life.

My starting weight was 272. The highest it's been in a very long time. :( This is really troubling after getting down to about 240 last year. This time I want to make it stick. This morning I weighed in at 269. It's a start. Until next Friday.....

Wii Fit Party

If you've been reading my blog, you know I have a Wii and a Wii Fit. I've been using it off and off for a while. This new year, I'm going to start using it more regularly. So I've joined up with a group of moms who call themselves the Wii Fit Mommies. We are working to keep each other accountable. There is a kick off Twitter party on Saturday from 6-8 MT. (Since I'm in Mountain time!). They are giving away a bunch of stuff for the Wii. Come join us.

I crave water

(or at least that's what I've been telling myself!) I haven't had anything to drink except water since Friday night. And I've been going through 5 or more water bottles a day. I'm ready to get started on losing weight---and keeping it off this time! Last year, I made too many changes too quickly. I stopped drinking Pepsi and eating chocolate at the same time I started working out (walking and strength training almost every day) and eating whole grains. I was successful at losing weight---almost 30 pounds. But then life happened (more specifically, my daughter had a seizure) and I fell off the wagon. I drank more Pepsi the 3 days we were in Albuquerque, than I had had in 5 months. And I couldn't stop. Slowly, the weight came back.

I've been trying to use my Wii Fit everyday. I haven't been successful every day. But I'm trying.

Time to get (Wii) Fit

It's been a while since I've posted about my constant struggle with my weight. I'm officially a "yo-yo" dieter. I have lost and regained more than 30 pounds at least 3 times over the past 6 years. Right now, I'm starting out again. Today marks 10 months until 40. And I'm still (or should I say "back"?) at 265. I don't know if there is time to (safely) reach my goal of 150 by my 40th birthday, but I sure want to get close. Last night I discovered a new group forming called Wii Fit Mommiis. (If you are unfamiliar with the Wii video game system, you create a character or Mii.) This group is encouraging Moms to get moving. I'm going to join them. I've had my Wii Fit for a while, but I haven't been using it much. I'm going to start tonight.
